The High Call

Fighting up San Juan Hill, struggling till we drop,
Pushed onward, and upward, crawling for that top,
Brave and bold, young and old, heroes to the man!
All eyes on the future, dying for their land,
Till over and over I hear one refrain,
"Duty and honor, remember the Maine".

Fathers of Georgia, sons of Tennessee,
All willing to die for the land of the free,
Stood at a barren top, victory in hand,
Mourning the fallen on bloody foreign sand.
Still over and over I hear their refrain,
"Duty and honor, remember the Maine".

Today is different, we do our own thing,
Obliging our feelings, seeking the next fling,
Unfettered with duty, unconcerned with 'caught',
"You must be joking, with drivel about ought!"
But, over and over I hear a refrain,
"Duty and honor, remember the Maine".

Indulgent and selfish, yet, part of our genes,
History reminds us with war's deathly scenes,
A present linkage to the heroes of the past,
The high call in us all, the die has been cast.
Yea, over and over I hear our refrain,
"Duty and honor, remember the Maine".
